EU USB-C Rule to Reduce E-Waste and save €250 Million Yearly

Small and medium sized devices such as smartphones and tablets must be USB-C compatible to address E-waste and reduce costs according to EU USB-C Rule

Approved in 2022 the EU USB-C Rule will allow the 27 countries European Union bloc consumers to charge their phones, cameras, laptops, video games, headphones, and other small and medium sized devices with one type of chargers.

According to the new EU USB-C Rule the consumers are allowed to do not purchase a new charger with new device and they can opt out of buying a new charger every time which can save them a lot of money.

The EU parliament voted overwhelming in 2022 in the favor of EU USB-C Rule which will implement unanimous chargers to save people from costs and reduce the e-waste.

the EU USB-C Rule approved in 2022 scraps all alternative charging methods and apply one and unanimous USB-C charging method in all small and medium sized devices across the EU.

Laptop Manufacturers and EU USB-C Rule

According to the law laptop manufacturers will require to apply the same rule from 28 April 2026. the makers of laptop have been given some extra time and some of these devices are using USB-C chargers in advance but they will follow the rule after the given period.

according to Anna Cavazzini, chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection the move will save the millions for the consumers and will reduce E-waste.

“These rules are about tackling the tons of waste generated by discarded chargers each year and saving an estimated €250 million for EU households by eliminating unnecessary charger purchases each year,”

The Benefits of EU USB-C Rule

The common charger law can have various benefits for the consumers in the European Union. 

Harmonizing fast charging technology:

The rule will ensure that all the consumers have access to same charging speed across the region and the bloc. they will harmonize the charging speed according to the new law to harmonize the charging speed.

Consumer Convenience:

the consumer do not need separate charger for every device to charge. they can charge their small and medium sized devices will the same chargers regardless of their device brand.

Reduce E-Waste:

the new law will help the bloc to reduce E-waste. the bloc produce 11000 tons of e-waste annually which will drastically reduce by reusing their chargers.

Save Money:

According to the reports the rule and the law will save €250 Million Yearly for the consumers across the 27 countries bloc by reusing their chargers and opting out of buying new chargers for their new devices.

The EU USB-C Rule applied on 28 December 2024 will require all these devices  mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, headsets, videogame consoles, portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice, portable navigation systems and earbuds to follow the rule and introduce the USB-C chargers for their consumers. 

Laptops makers will require to adopt to the rules From 28 April 2026 according to EU USB-C Rule.

The decision was contested by the tech giant Apple initially citing new discoveries and innovation. The EU USB-C Rule will affect all devices makers and producers in the region. Apply have agreed to the law and will compony the rules but some of the Apple devices are already using Type C chargers.
