BRUSSELS: Italy wants changes to the EU-Mercosur trade deal in the agricultural section. As per ANSA reports the deal dated 2019, is aimed to reduce duties or eliminate import duties with South American countries.Â
Italy wants to change some sections in the trade deal with the Mercosur countries including Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay to protect the environment and workers rights in the EU.Â
We want to formalize the deal with Mercosur but want some changes to it as Tajani was quoted “We are in favor of the deal with Mercosur, but we need to correct some points on agricultural issues” by ANSA in the sidelines of NATO ministerial meeting in Brussels.
Beef Import
More than 90000 ton of beef is included in the EU-Mercosur trade deal to be imported with reduced duties or no import duties.
French farmers protested against the trade deal and called it unfair and unjustified. they said that the deal will increase their burden to their existing problems they face with cheap imports and no regulations.
Italy’s Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida slammed the EU-Mercosur trade deal and said that the draft is “Not Acceptable”. He mentioned that Italy is ready to finalize the deal with Mercosur countries but the deal must be fair and workers’ rights and environmental regulations must be considered.
South America’s Mercosur bloc will hold a meeting in Uruguay to discuss the deal and clinch the long-delayed deal with European Union.
They said that they are working to to achieve the industrial goal of the EU but they are concerned about some sections. The trade deal between EU-Mercosur is pushed by Spain and Germany.
